Old School You is proud to create the Old School Football Rivalry Network to bring old and new rivals together to engage in Friendly banter about the great games from the past.
Tell your unique stories about those infamous rivalry games.
I'd like to share my two stories from a rivalry game from my high school playing days.
In 1982 as the Bulldogs of Syracuse (KS) were in their locker room, which was under the stadium, preparing for the district title game against our hated rival, the Johnson Trojans. We were 7-1 and they were 8-0. As we quietly prepared for the game of our lives there was a loud knock on the door. One of the coaches went to answer the door. What the coach brought in was a Black Wreath of Black Roses. It had been hand delivered right before kickoff. I don't know if I would call it sportsmanship, but what gamesmanship. The message was pretty clear.
I've always claimed that some of the player's parents or girl friends did it. We never found out who did it. We lost 21-0. The only consolation was that the Trojans were defeated by the Sterling Black Bears in the playoffs. The Black Bears went on to win the State Championship. I have been a teacher and football coach for 20 years for the Black Bears. Old School You has that Johnson - Sterling game on DVD. I know that the Sterling players from that 1982 season love to tell the stories how they beat SC with a sophomore, backup QB.
The second rivalry game memory was the very next year against the very same team. I was starting only my third game as QB that night and knew that Johnson was the number one team in the state. This game would decide the district championship. Just as the bus was about to leave for the 27 mile trip south to Johnson. Two Johnson (Stanton County) High School girls showed up with a large, brown grocery bag. In the bag was a mountain of hallmark type greeting cards. Each envelope with the name of each starting player. Our coach handed them out to us. Each card was a sympathy card with a personalized poem from one player from Johnson. The messages were typed and quite personal and very descriptive. I must admit it was somewhat intimidating. The cards really didn't make a difference though. As much as I hate to say it, the Trojans were the better team. They won the 1983 State Championship.
I'm sure you have stories even stranger and greater than those. Share 'em and see if your old rivals knew it.
I'm calling out old Johnson football players from those years. Did you all know anything about those two incidents?
